MF DOOM: Tribute to a Legend

Welcome to Hip-Hop Heads yet again with another episode of that realism. Today we will pay respect to a dear Hip-Hop legend , MF DOOM.On the 31st of October 2020, Danielle Dumile passed away. His death was announced two months later, by his wife, Jasmine.His cause of death still remains unknown.

Daniele Dumile was an American-British rapper and record producer. He was famously known under the pseudonym,MF DOOM, which was inspired by Marvel Comics supervillain character Doctor Doom.

In his early life , he loved collecting comic books and for that he earned the nickname Doom, which is actually a phonetic play on his last name Dumile.This passion led to him to develop one of the most iconic figures, not just in underground Hip-Hop, but in Hip-Hop as a whole(culture).

Dumile created the MF Doom character as an alter ego with a backstory he could reference in his music. When he adopted this persona, he would several camera appearances with a mask and refused to be photographed without one.

His mask resembled the Marvel supervillain Doctor Doom. Dumile also drew inspiration from comic-books which he also incorporated in his raps. This made him have an intricate and imaginative style.

MF DOOM, the son of a Zimbabwean father and Trinidian mother, was born in London on July 13th, 1971.They moved to Long Island, New York where he started off as a DJ. Although he was born in London, he said he had no affiliation with British culture and neither did his parents.

Dumile was raised Muslim by his parents. He was born under the Five-percent Nation islamic movement. His father taught him about Pan-African History alongside the historical figures such as Marcus Garvey and Elijah Muhammad.

Even though he was raised in the United States, he never gained American citizenship. Dumile remeained a British citizen. This caught up with him in 2010, when he was denied reentry into the United States after his international tour.

In his Final years he then permanently relocated to London.

Style And Artistry

Doom was a master when it came to his art. Well known for his wordplay and his intricate rhymes. He displayed a rasp and baritone delivery along with multisyllablic rhymes and imaginative style.

Doom’s flow is loose and conversational yet also technically precise.People loved him for his off-beat cadence and unique comic-book persona.

Variety said that he is “One of the most unpredictable and enigmatic figures in Hip-Hop history.”

Madvillainy is the sole studio album by American Hip-Hop duo Madvillain, comprised of rapper MF Doom and Madlib.

This is the album that influenced a generation of artists, namely:

•Joey Badass

•Tyler,The Creator

•Earl Sweatshirt

•Capital Steez

•Kirk Knight

•Flying Lotus

The album is a landmark in Hip-Hop and it MF DOOM on the map. It was the second most critically acclaimed album during its time.

Mos Def:”Dude I swear to God. When I saw that Madvillainy record. I bough it on vinyl just to stare at the albim. I starred at it and kept going ‘I Understand You’. “

MF DOOM left a unique legacy in Hip-Hop. He was one of the most fascinating figures in Hip-Hop. His lyrical style had a worldwide influence to the culture.

He never sold a platinum record,but he was an icon. A guy with a mask who potrayed himself as an enemy of the commercial music industry. His album Madvillainy is his formative influence on numerous young rappers.
