Quarantine has not been easy lately, especially during my free time. There is not much to be done in the house. I watched some YouTube for a couple of hours. Thereafter, I stumbled upon some of the best rap documentaries on youtube.
Completely mind-blowing doccies that inspire and educate. Very unique to true hip-hop heads who are just looking to know more about the events that take place in hip-hop. Particularly in the last two decades that have passed.

Here are my 7 best rap documentaries on Youtube. They are 100% binge-worthy:
Dreamville Presents: REVENGE
For The Children: Enter The Wu-Tang(36 Chambers)
The Art Of 16 Bars (Full Documentary)
Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme
The Success of Drake
Juice WRLD: Living Past 21
Eminem: Behind The Lyrics
They say some of the best rap documentaries are found only on Netflix, but I disagree. If you have some internet access, you can find yourself some of the best hip-hop documentaries in 2021.
But, you won't have to do that, because I already hand-picked a few that are worth a chain watch.
1. Dreamville Presents: REVENGE
A new hip-hop documentary from Dreamville went down as one the best rap documentaries in history. It was based on the creation of the grammy-nominated album Revenge Of The Dreamers III. It was a collaborative spirit that flooded through the artists. Dreamville takes us through the creative process of their latest album. Starring big names like Ski Mask The Slump God, Saba, Da Baby and so many more. This will really inspire you if you're an up-and-coming hip-hop artist.
2. For The Children: Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
This documentary, based on the heroic Wu-Tang Clan, was released on November 9th, 2019. Celebrating 25 years since the release of their iconic debut album, 36 Chambers. It included Joey Bada$$, A$AP Ferg, and A$AP Rocky, who also go into detail on how they were influenced by the Wu-Tang Clan.
Ignoring my opinion, this is truly one of the best rap documentaries on youtube.
To Enter Hip-hop, You Must Enter The 36 Chambers...
The short film was a behind-the-scenes narration of the rise of Wu-Tang in Staten Island. They play short snippets of songs such as Bring Da Ruckus, The C.R.E.A.M and etc. The hip-hop clique takes you through the making of their classic debut album, 36 Chambers, which has been re-certified triple-platinum with the RIAA ever since its release.
3. The Art Of 16 Bars (Full Documentary)
This is a special one, and it is dedicated to all my rappers and producers out there. If this does not immensely inspire you to compose and start learning then nothing will. This is 1 hour of advice from the greatest lyricists of all time. From KRS-One to Kanye West.
Learn from the greatest MCs precisely how they made progress. They share their way to deal with live performances and how they set up a demo tape, got signed, and managed names just as their insight about how the overall business functions.
If you are serious about pursuing your music career, then this is a must-watch for you!
4. Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme
A film that educates you on the true meaning of freestyling and cyphering. Personally, before watching this I saw freestyling and cyphering as a reserved exercise for MCs to improve their delivery, cadence, punchlines, and metaphors. Originally, freestyling is a form of self-expression more than it is an art form.
Anyone can freestyle, it's just all muscle memory. With repeated practice, anyone can master it. Cyphering is actually more of an activity of unity within. It unites the youth in most marginalized communities.
I never knew all of this until I watched this documentary. It is worth a watch, considering the way it gives a little background on hip-hop culture.
It also gives a little history lesson on the best freestyle rappers to ever live in hip-hop.
5. The Succes Of Drake.
The title is self-explanatory. The film is broken down into the following different segments :
Intro
Before The Fame
Early Career
Breaking Out Of Toronto
Meeting Wayne
Rise To Success
YMCMB Era
Establishing The Brand
Drake Era
Preeminence
An autobiographical film about Aubrey Drake Graham, famously known as Drake. The film tells Drake's story from when he was starting out as an up-and-coming rapper to his rise to stardom.
All of my Drake fans are definitely going to love this one. A mini-doc of Drake's overall success in the music industry. From being popular on MySpace to breaking out the charts and winning the award of Best Artist Of The Decade at the Billboard Awards this year.
6 Juice WRLD: Living Past 21.
The story of Juice WRLD. If I'm being honest, he was never a personal favorite. I never got to listen to his music until I knew about his overall story. This documentary dives into the life and death of Juice WRLD.
I was really touched when I heard of his story. The way he passed on was sad for a young and talented rapper who had such a promising future. He dealt with his own demons as we all are and sadly it led him to his fate.
Take nothing away from him though, he was truly and still is the most influential rapper of his age. Inspiring millions even in his absence.
7. Eminem: Behind The Lyrics
You probably already know his story, especially if you're reading this from the United States, but most South Africans don't know the real and true story behind Marshal Mathers. I recommend this if you're curious about his struggles and rise to success.
You witness how his childhood contributed to his mental problems.
Thank you for reading this!
